Papal Blessing

Did you know that if you are Catholic, you can have your marriage blessed by the Pope himself? This is called the Papal Blessing and is also known as Benediction Papalis.

Day14 116

So what exactly is a Papal Blessing? A Papal Blessing may be requested by any Catholics for occasions such as a birthday, Catholic weddings, Catholic anniversaries, First Communion, Confirmation and ordinations. The Papal blessing is given in the form of a certificate and is beautifully printed in parchment with a photo of the current Pope, signature and papal seal with the blessing itself beautifully written in calligraphy.

So how can you request for a Papal Blessing? There are two ways to obtain the Papal Blessing:

If you are outside Rome, you need to contact your parish office at least six months prior to when the blessing is needed. You will fill up a form asking you of specific information namely:

• the occasion for which the blessing is being requested;
• the date of the occasion;
• the name of the Catholic Church in which the ceremony will take place as well as the city and State;
• the name and address of the person that the blessing should be sent to.
• the full name of the groom and also the full name of the bride with her maiden name

The parish priest will then send the letter to the chancery office for processing. The cost for the blessing is around $ 25.00 to $ 50.00 depending on style of the certificate chosen and the proceeds of which goes to feed the poor.

It is of course much quicker if you will get it directly from the Vatican (which we should have done when we were there last year). All the couple has to do is visit the Papal Blessing Office on the Via del Pellegrino. It will take around two weeks to process the Papal Blessing and when ready it can either be picked up at the office or mailed to the address specified by the couple.

Receiving an apostolic blessing bestowed by the Pope is really one of the best gifts that any Catholic can receive.
